A new study that appeared in the British Medical Journal linked sitting for long periods, such as watching TV, as being a risk for diabetes, strokes and even heart disease.
Sitting has now been classed as having the same degree of risk as obesity and smoking and has been attributed to shaving years off your life.
We are a mammal that evolved to roam over large areas of terrain tracking food. While we are slower than many animals, having the ability to sweat meant that we didn’t need to rest and could tire other species out.
Now, sitting down all day for our work, and also sitting at night while watching TV or using computers, means that we get very little exercise. This impacts hugely on many aspects of our health and yes, can even shorten our life.
Some companies are now starting to provide desks where you can stand up at your computer or read an article while walking on a treadmill. I think we will see this as more common place over the next few years. Otherwise, ensure you get out and have a walk at lunch or bike or walk to work so that you get some regular exercise away from the office.
